HGL is actually an easy game to lvl up and there is no big secret and I'm sharing my pervert lvling way with all the kakis. 
L1 to L10
This can be done in one night, maybe 1 hrs plus depending on your skill and luck. Once you reach the first noob station, get all the quests there (maybe 2 or 3 in the first round and once u completed them, the npc will give u new quests). You can grind to L5 very fast by doing the peg leg boy quest but DO NOT COMPLETE IT! Instead just repeat this quest until you hit L5 coz u can keep farming the boss for nice items (legendary/unique gears). What u do is to kill all mobs in zone for xp and after killing the boss, there will be a ? on top on the corpse. Just loot everything using "F" key but DO NOT click on the boss corpse. Just exit game and relog back to the noob station, zone in and repeat. After L5 u can con't stay such though the xp will slow down coz the mobs inside are below L5 I think. Anyway, even if you decided to move to the next station, DO NOT complete the peg leg boy quest, just leave it alone and move on coz u can come back to farm lowbie items for ya alts in future. Next complete all the other quests in the noob station and find your way to the next station (refer to the map found inside the game box). Once you reach the next station, the main quest line will ask u to find a doc in a zone next to the npc seller. Just forcus on this quest until u hit L10 and here's how u do it. Zone in, kill all the mobs inside, there will be a black hole portal in the zone, this is where u can find the doc and there is a boss mob inside. Zone into the black hole portal and stay at the ent, the boss mob will automatically run to u after few sec. Kill it and loot all the l33t loots to gear yaself but DO NOT CLICK on the ? doctor. If your gears is good enuff to clear all the mobs, do it for xp but if you can't, just exit the game, relog and repeat. Once you hit L10 and if you wish to con't farming until u get full set of legendary/unique gears, just zone in, siam all mobs, zone into black hole portal, wait for boss to come, kill it, exit game and repeat. It's very fast to hit L10 using this method but u prolly spend longer time to farm items. In fact this is the best time to farm items coz the first 2 bosses can be reached very fast but the other bosses later will need to zone more times b4 u reach them, not so farm-able. Once you get full sets of unique/legendary gears, move on to the next station.
Note for BM: Try to get a sprectral dam and a fire dam sword b4 u move forward coz with these 2 weaps, u can clear mobs very fast.
L11 to L30
Actually from L11 onwards to L50, nothing special except for the next farming point which is the mind of 314. This is another farming zone which u dun need to fight thru other zones to reach it. Just kill all the 3 bosses, loot everything (DO NOT TALK TO THE NPC), exit game and repeat. You should reach Act 5 by L30, give or take.
L31 to L35
This is the time to farm Hell. Make sure u find all the quests in St Paul's station BEFORE you talk to Emma (sp?) to start the last fight, otherwise some may get bugged and u can't completed if you complete the final quest first. By the time u completed all quests, you shld be at least L32, tat's the time to cheong Hell. You can either:
1. Farm last 2 zone, kill the 5 mini-bosses for loot but siam the final boss so that u can repeat farming.
OR
2. Finish everything and move to Nightmare mode.
Take note that if you choose to finish the normal game under option #2, u can come back to kill the 5 mini-bosses and final boss again but I feel that the loots are not as good as the first time u kill them. It'll be the same if u help someone who is clearing it the first time, that guy will get nice loots but u will just get normal boss loots - still better than normal loots of coz.
Once you hit L35, u shld move on to nightmare mode coz the xp is no longer as good.
L35 to L50
Nightmare mode, more l33t loots! And the mobs oso hit super hard, lol. Take note of the following:
1. Get a fire splash weap, and 2 if you are a BM. Fire splash weaps are highly advisable bcoz of the ignite dam. In NM mode the named mobs and higher-end mobs have very high hp so a 5% damage per sec is far better than u spam a 10/10 atk skill non stop, trust me, this is espectially true if u fight mobs >5 lvl above u which I won't advise (see below). For BM, once you move to 2nd or 3rd stations will u get to see spectral splash weap, get one and pair with your fire splash weap, it'll help u to kill the mobs faster coz phased mob = hit u 50% lesser and take 50% more dam from u.
2. Try to deal with mobs which is <5 lvl above u. The mobs in this game is such that anything 5 lvls or higher than u will hit u super hard and u have a hard time whacking them, not to mention it'll be more difficult for you to stick your special dam (eg ignite) on them. If you notice the next quest zone is filled with mobs >5 lvls above u, just run back to the old zones and clear the mobs for xp until u get within the 5 lvls gap b4 u move on. If u keep fighting mobs which is 2-3 lvls above u, u can easily gain a lvl in 60-90 min max, and I'm talking abt MN mode, high 30 to L40ish but I believe same applies till u hit L50. This is a painful lesson that I learn coz I wanan farm higher lvl weaps but I end up dying like 10 over times in those zone 8-9 lvls above me. So I went back to those zones 1-2 lvls above me, it's so easy and xp comes in very fast. Of coz the down side is that u will get to loot the higher lvl loots but unless u are looking for specific items which is only available in higher lvl zone (eg I was farming zones >5 lvls above me coz I am looking for a spectral splash sword). Now that I've found a spectral splash sword to go with my fire splash sword, I return to those zones which are 1-3 lvls above me to farm xp.
The above guide is for soloing, which I've been doing all these while, lol.
When in grp, it's supposed to have more tougher mobs and better loots but there isn't many L40ish players around plus chat is so unfriendly, I rather go straight to solo, faster and hassle free.
