the graphics and spells effects are gorgeous. Nice detailed looking dungeon...
But other than that, the combat and dungeon romping doesn't seem to be any different from our standard MMOG. It actually looks a little like NWN. I hope combat/gameplay can be as exciting and fast paced as the Bioware D&D RPGs.

I think the next frontier for Dev is to improve combat. Make combat more exciting and fast pace (as mentioned by Sotong). Game area (land mass) can easily be increased, items added, quests added, but if combat stays in its current form, you can expect future MMORPGs to all be in the same mold as EQ, EQ2, etc..
I guess 1 big obstacle with having arcade style combat in MMORPG is the lag... with the rapid pace of hardware innovation, i hope we can see some FPS kind of combat in MMORPGs soon.

HO and fancy moves definitely add to the kick, but still not as innovative yet. EQ2's combat is frankly a bit slow, lots of waiting for recast timers. Makes it feel like a turn-based combat. One reason WoW feels faster because combat in general are faster paced (got a bit flavor from Diablo) and you tend to move and kill a lot due to vast spaces. EQ2 feels slower cos the zones are smaller and there's not much move and kill. Generally spawns of certain levels are designated to specific areas. So you end up having to go to similar place all the time and camp.

I find zones like Nek Castle one of the best dungeons. A little buggy at times, but heck, one of the most exciting place to kill, adventure, and quest.

With the flood of MMOs on the market, with yet more to come, it's getting overwhelming keeping track of it all. And it's a little dull to document a title that really doesn't do much to get everyone out of the "kill, loot, level up, collect, deliver" cycle, and even worse to play it. Thankfully, DDO looks like it's taking a joyously detour into the fun zone. The key? Basing everything on D&D modules instead of tiresomely generic quests to kill a certain number of whizzywhigs, or collect 8 foozles, or deliver this zingythingy to Ted in Accounting. When you're asked to do something, it looks like you're actually being asked to do something, rather than engage in an arbitrary task that will grant you arbitrary items. Each module is also instanced, and you're teleported right to it when you agree to do it. DDO is also set in the Eberron universe, rather than the worn-thin Forgotten Worlds we get all the time. What's not to like?

BTW, DDO supposed to be small group thingie for a start, 10 levels cap, instance dungeon runs, no mobs XP grinding, etc. Sounds more like some social game you can play on non-raid days... Hehehehe

Fighter, Cleric, Rogue, Wizard, Sorceror, Ranger, Paladin
No Druids, no monks.
Multiclassing available.
10 levels max (for multi-class, translates to sum of class levels = 10 max)

Quote: Web site says (for a start):Max level 10 is kind of low. The original D&D 3rd edition capped at level 20. And they provide Epic class/level that extended beyond level 20.

Anyway, this is still in beta, have to wait and see how it goes. I do know that, the XP reward is not as "crazy" as other MMORPG, thus it may take quite a while to reach level 10.
Rogue may be a popular class if what Turbine said is true that there are lots of deadly traps in the game.

hmmm.. L10 cap sounds kinda odd. That means L9 and L10 is actually a 10% difference. For EQ2 or WoW, 10% means L60 and L54 which is hell lot of difference.
That means every zero-point-something level will get a new spell? Looks like it is very very different from wat we are playing now.

Have gone through some review from the beta players. Seems like DDO is more toward casual gamers then power gamers. Most of the XP earned by completing quests and not by killing the mobs.
The only concerned as stated in one of the beta player is, will there be enough quests to substain the gamer interest? Atm, the current quests is about 130+.
I am getting tempted to try DDO now. ^^!

Still can't patch...
I get an "Update error" at the "Examine Program" stage. The log file shows:
GetLauncherConfig from: "http://gls.ddo.turbine.com/launcher/beta/dndlauncher.server.config.xml" 03/02/2006 06:49:47 AM
Exception "The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive." in GetLauncherConfig 03/02/2006 06:49:48 AM
ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings: 03/02/2006 06:49:48 AM
But using my browser I can see that xml file listed. How?
Do you think it's a trust certificate issue? How do you update the root certificates for a "friendly" version of windows?

Got a reply email from Beta support. They advised that some of the install files may have been corrupted and recommended a reloading of the install file.
So after another 1.6GB download, I'm back to where I started, no patch and no DDO Beta...sigh
Harry you have no problems with yours ar? I think I have problems connecting to their patch server.
