Hey people,
I just splurged on an Intel P4 2.GHz CPU and the new MSI GNB Max Mobo (Intel 7250 Chipset) with 1GB of DDR266 SDRAM and the Hercules Radeon 9700.
Unfortunately, I have a big problem where the CPU idle temperature with my entire casing open is at 60 degrees celsius.
When the casing is full closed, it climbs a bit then after 10 mins of running, it spikes through the roof to 70 degrees celsius at which point the temperature monitor kicks in and shutsdown the system.
Currently, I have 2 of the normal 3000rpm casing fans mounted on the front chasis blowing in. The fan on the CPU is the stock fan that comes with the CPU.
What I'm wondering is whether my cooling solution is wrong (ie need more powerful fans, change the fan on the CPU, apply thermal paste etc.) or is it a defective CPU?
I still have a slot for a small fan on the chasis next to the CPU. Was thinking of putting a fan there to suck out the hot air since the 2 in front are already blowing in.
Comments please?

(I got until next Sunday for a one to one exchange)
Just seeing my baby overheat is putting me into an extremely bad mood... <_<
is ur cpu fan working?
did u o/c ?
is ur HSF sitting properly?

yep..CPU fan spinning properly
No O/C
HS seated properly on the CPU

looks like a faulty heatsink...

So should I bring back the entire CPU package for a change or just go get a better heatsink on my own?
I find it strange that the idle temperature on startup is already 60 degrees. My reasoning is that if there is insufficient ventilation, the temperature should start low and rise steadily until it overheats right? Not overheat right at the start...

might be a faulty CPU?
did you check out MSI webby whether there is something wrong with your temperature monitor for the new motherboard?
Hmm....webbie said release bios is faulty. It causes the system to run at 136Mhz FSB even when FSB has been set to 133Mhz. But this little bit won't overheat the CPU by a large margin right?
Downloading the updated bios that fixes the problem now. Temperature still high..

Is ur CPU really hot?? might be a false alarm generated by your m/b.
if ur temps are so high, when u touch ur hs it shld be quite warm if it is functioning... if the hs is quite cool, then it will seem like ur hs is not working... btw where u buy from? see whether the shop can help u troubleshoot
The HS is pretty cool to the touch. I bought it from CyberMax. :(

never apply thermal compound properly?

if that is the case, I got a feeling the heatsink is not seated properly, or if it, then it looks like it is faulty. Why dun u bring back and let the shop take a look?
Did you peel off the thermal compound sticker properly or something?
A lot of people didnt know there is one.
Plus if the heatsink is cool, means that it may not be sitting properly on the chip.

Hmm...there isn't a sticker on the HS. Just a square piece of black material that comes off very easily when scratched which I suppose is a layer of carbon to improve the thermal contact. I'm not really sure if its seated properly coz when the HS is inside the retaining bracket before lock down, it doesn't move about, so it seems pretty tight to me.
I'm bringing the CPU and HS down today to check. Will be getting some thermal paste and another chasis fan as well. Maybe getting a new HS/Fan as well....argh

Best is to go back to the shop and let them check for u.
If u nvr o/c,ya temp shldn't go above 40 degree. Even when I o/c from 2.53 to 2.8 for testing, my temp only hit 40 odd and kinda stay there.
sound like u need some cool coke or beer on ur CPU :)

I have a question, how did you measure the CPU temperature? From BIOS? MBM? Thermal probe?
Like the others have mentioned, if your heatsink is cool to touch after about 30minutes of usage, then the problem should lie somewhat there.

The newer batches of Intel Pentium stock heatsinks don't come with the sticker anymore. Probably too many people didn't peel it off so Intel remove it altogether. Now its just a square black mass of thermal pad. :)

I measured the CPU temp with a utility that came with the mobo. Prolly gets input from the temperature sensor in the CPU.
Yea...that black mass is the thermal pad. I remember the first time the CPU overheated and system shut down, it was already stuck to the CPU. Had to pry the CPU off the HS gently using a screw driver. Now there isn't any thermal pad on my HS or CPU anymore <_<
Problem solved. Turns out my mobo was using the wrong Vcore voltage for the processor when I set it to autodetect. The CPU was specced at 1.5V but MB was feeding it 1.7V. No wonder it overheated...DOH! <_<
Anyways, here's some news for those people planning to get the MSI GNB Max or Max 2 boards based on the Intel 7250 chipset that supports dual channel DDR RAMs. The BIOS that it ships with may run your CPU at 136MHz FSB even though it has been set to 133MHz. Will need a BIOS update to solve it. Another thing is that you have to manually set the Vcore voltage in the BIOS setting according to the processor you're using.
Thanks for all the advice given! You guys rock! :D
Gratz! :D
How much did u get your Rig for? :)

Wor, nice rig, more than enuff for SWG and EQ2 I guess. :)

hehe..that was the plan. Actually if not for some other reasons, I would have held off the upgrade till end of next month when the ATI Radeon 9800 and Geforce FX ship so as to shave a little bit more off the graphics card. And maybe Intel would have launched their 3.6GHz processor as well. Oh well....at least I get to play around with it now :P
Intel cutting price again in May.
Hi everyone,
I use Intel P4 2.4B GHz Processor. But my problem is that when I on my PC, the fan is running very fast and loudly after half an hour c.p.u. become very hot. So, what I have to do for that. can you solve this problem. please give me suggest about it.
Thanks in advance,

If fan run very fast, cpu shldn't get too hot. If cpu get too hot, your fan prolly has problem. You may wanan chk and replace it.
